IT Sustainability and Smart Strips

Did you know that even when powered off, electronic devices that are "plugged in" to a standard outlet or power strip continue to consume power? The electricity that devices consume even when they are turned off is referred to as Standby, Vampire, or Phantom Power. Smart strips eliminate standby power by controlling and reducing energy use. Depending on specific use, some studies estimate that a smart strip can save you up to 73% of power usage. Vendors indicate that a smart strip can pay for itself in as little as six weeks.

How do smart switches work?

Smart switches contain one outlet designed as the "control" outlet. There are multiple outlets on the strip called "switched" outlets. the switched outlets monitor the master outlet. When the device connected to the master is powered off, the switched outlets are also powered off.

For example, if you connect the CPU of your computer to the control outlet, with your monitors and speakers connected to the switched outlets....whenever you power off your computer, the monitors and speakers will also automatically be powered off.
